Truth In Lies: The Secret Cost of Innocence
2022

During a difficult period in early 2022, I crafted an artwork using unconventional materials as an act of dissolving painful memories long hidden away in my keepsakes box. The centerpiece was a modified Valentine candy heart box made from my Mother's cherished communion dress and veil. Delicate blouse buttons made from repurposed letters written on paper were attached to symbolize the connection to my Mother's personal history.
I included seemingly ordinary communion wafers, which were actually made from pulped handwritten letters written to me by her over a period of 20 years. These letters held her genuine disappointment in me, serving as poignant reminders of our strained relationship.
I also incorporated my unsent responses to these letters, giving voice to my unspoken words. This artwork offered a platform for unexpressed thoughts, shedding light on perspectives and emotions.
