Conducting the sunset

Sweden, 2019.

In this photo, I stood in a small rowboat on Mälaren waving my conductor’s baton at a sunset. My residency that summer on that tiny island was life-changing and ushered in change that I could not have anticipated. I’m reminded of this experience during the vernal equinox; a pivotal shift in the cosmic flow, because though I can’t predict the exact specifics of what’s coming, I can feel the pull of change afoot. And with it I go.

Yesterday I crouched down on a broken branch over the sandy shore of Lake Michigan for well over an hour, watching rough waves competing to reach further and further. The span of the lake is too great to see across, so it feels more like a dirty ocean than lake. No boats, one bird, no message in a bottle. I stood barefoot on a stump spinning poi for a while, winding up the winds and coordinating my way. And eventually carved symbols into the sand, always of love and well wishes for humanity and peace among us all. Being near the water is healing for the year I’ve had. So much dramatic change and uncertainty, accompanied by incredibly beautiful scenery and support from unexpected sources. We’re all feeling it.

As autumn befalls, I begin to go in, and further. My dreams become more complex plot lines, strange and unfamiliar cast of characters, traversing new and otherworldly realms. It’s just richer in this weather. Being up north for the week is a great transition into fall from the whole rest of the year and whatever season that’s been. Life has been wild. My work reflects this journey.

In the midst of turning tides, I began a new painting. It won’t be part of my solo exhibition next fall, but pushed itself through the surface during a period of upheaval. It goes like that. When I return home, I will finish that painting then fall headfirst into art for HOLY GHOST 2027. Just in time for fall and winter.

Available tattoo designs will be posted quietly on my website as the months pass. This website alone is where you’ll find me over the next year.

Happy equinox….
